On July 11th NSLI-Y Korea students attended a cooking class at the Korean Culinary Officer College in Seoul where they learned to cook bulgogi and hwajeon, which are small rice flower pancakes with edible flowers. This cultural activity gave students a chance to practice their new food vocabulary and learn more about Korean culture through the cuisine.
Groups of students were paired with Korean culinary students to complete their dishes and practice their Korean language skills. Reporters from a Seoul Shinmun online were also there to film the foreign students cooking Korean food.
Check out the video below for the news report (in Korean) featuring NSLI-Y students starting at 0:45.
"We cooked Korean food! We made 불고기(beef) and 화전(rice pancake.) It was so much fun to make and our chef was explaining everything to us even though he was not confident with his English at all. Our불고기tasted the best out of all the groups, everyone kept on eating it!”
