NSLI-Y China and South Korea students return to the U.S. after 6 weeks of intensive language study. This summer, 50 students traveled to Seoul, South Korea and 20 students traveled to Zhuhai, China to participate in the language scholarship program funded by the U.S. Department of State. All students lived with host families, were immersed in the local culture, and showed remarkable growth in their Mandarin and Korean language skills.
NSLI-Y China
This year’s students studied Mandarin Chinese and Beijing Normal University Zhuhai campus in Southeast China and focused on building listening and speaking skills to communicate with host families and locals. Aside from time spent in the language classroom, the students engaged in a variety of activities including:
- Chinese painting, calligraphy, Peking opera, cooking, and taichi cultural classes
- Cultural tour of Beijing with visits to the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Olympic Park, and the Forbidden City
- Community service activities and exchange with local high school students
NSLI-Y Korea
The group of 50 students participated in a rigorous language study program at Sogang University in Seoul this year. They also learned about Korean culture through the host family experience and various cultural activities such as:
- Weekly meetings with Korean college student supporters with trips to markets, tourist sites, and other places of interest around town
- Cooking lessons at the culinary institute and Talchum mask decorating and dance performances
- Korean American Exchange Camp where students made friends with Korean youth and shared their culture
