Students Explore the Scenic Towns of Hualien and Taitung in Eastern Taiwan

In late January, NSLI-Y Taiwan students took a week-long trip to the eastern Taiwan towns of Hualien and Taitung. Eastern Taiwan is known for its beautiful mountainous terrain, particularly that of Taroko National Park. While in Hualien, the students went boating, climbed mountains, and walked along the beach. After exploring Hualien, they headed down the coast to Taitung, where they stayed with local families. Taitung is famous for its preservation of aboriginal culture. At the local high school, the students learned how to make aboriginal handcrafts and sing aboriginal songs. On the final day of the trip, the group volunteered in Chishang, where they sang traditional Taiwanese songs with the elderly.
